earth day River, Park & Storm Drain Clean up
Saturday April 20, 2024, 9:00-noon
The theme for Earth Day 2024, Planet vs. Plastics, calls to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demand an end to fast fashion.
Please join neighbors and friends to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Each person helps keep pollution from getting into the Mississippi River and our environment. All ages welcome! From 9 to noon, we’ll offer several places to pick up supplies.
We’ll have gloves, bags for both recycling and trash, and information about the PPA Environment Committee.
- Tower Hill Park, in the grassy area north of the Tower, facing University Avenue. We would love to get enough people to extend the cleanup beyond Tower Hill - along University Avenue, around Pratt School, in the vacant lot next to Speedway service station and along the Transitway.
- Luxton Park - around the park the Luxton Community Center and Glendale Townhomes
- Along East River Parkway, just east of the bridge - for clean up along the parkway, Chergosky Park and environs
Please join us!!
PPA's Environment Committee is organizing this effort.
If you can't come down that morning, feel free to visit a nearby park, go along your street, or pick another area to clean up.
For more information or to commit to an area not by the river, please contact Lydia McAnerney
Dozens of Volunteers & many bags of trash!
Residents are encouraged to join their friends and
family for a day of service in the community. Help keep the storm water drains clear of litter and leaves, pick up the parks, or clean up your section of the neighborhood.
Origins of Earth Day
From Wikipedia: "In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature's equipoise was later sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin as an environmental teach-in on 2000 colleges and universities first held on April 22, 1970."
